So I really loved this season of Shrill and found it hard to write a straight-up review that wouldn’t end up being about one hundred pages long. In an attempt at brevity, I’m just going to list seven things I really loved from this season and talk about why I love them. There will be spoilers so if you didn’t inhale it all like I did you might want to pause here.

The Salon

Episode 7 “Salon” is a nesting doll of amazing moments. It gifts us guest star Illeana Douglas as Sheila, the publisher of The Thorn, who seems to be a huge fan of Annie (Aidy Bryant). The episode could’ve stopped there with the goddess from my childhood telling Annie that she’s talented. I would’ve been fine living this moment for a while but then the penultimate episode gave us the greatest gift of the whole season. Annie’s boss Gabe (John Cameron Mitchell) pauses the salon he’s hosting to perform a rendition of David Bowie’s “Moonage Daydream” which is a journey. Also, Ruthie (Patti Harrison) gets to have some honest and grounded moments that prove she’s more than the one-liner queen we’ve grown to love…and fear.

Trolls, Am I Right?

Season 2 picks up with Annie running from the home of her online troll with an energy and a light that we’ve never seen in her before. This was an amazing way to carry over last season’s final…
